Hrvatska zastava za Dan Državnosti u Vancouveru

Dear Mayor Ken Sim and Members of City Council,

I am writing to you today on behalf of the Canadian-Croatian community in British Columbia to formally  request the raising of the Croatian national flag at Vancouver City Hall on May 30th, 2026, in honor of Croatia Statehood Day (Dan državnosti).

As you may know, the Government of British Columbia has officially proclaimed May 30th as Croatia Statehood Day. This historic proclamation recognizes the rich history, sovereignty, and cultural heritage of Croatia. More  importantly, it honors the profound contributions that generations of Croatian-Canadians have made to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of Vancouver and the wider province.

The Croatian community in Vancouver has a long and proud history of integration, hard work, and community building. Raising the Croatian flag at City Hall on this significant day would be a deeply meaningful gesture of recognition and inclusion for thousands of Croatian-Canadians who call Vancouver home. It would also serve as a beautiful celebration of our city’s rich multicultural identity.

Furthermore, our community has shown its deep commitment to strengthening ties between our nations through the successful completion and dedication of the  Embassy building , in Ottawa a project driven by the generosity and hard work of Croatian-Canadians.

We would be deeply honored if the City of Vancouver would join us in celebrating this historic occasion by flying the Croatian flag on May 30th.

SRETAN VAM DAN HRVATSKE DRŽAVNOSTI

Poštovani,

U povodu Dana hrvatske državnosti, koji obilježavamo 30. svibnja 2024. godine, želimo vam iskrenu čestitku i izraziti ponos na bogatu povijest, kulturu i tradiciju naše domovine. Ovaj dan podsjeća nas na važnost očuvanja nacionalnog identiteta, slobode i suvereniteta Hrvatske, te na sve one koji su se borili za ostvarenje i očuvanje hrvatske državnosti.

Hrvatska državnost temelji se na tisućljetnoj tradiciji, od prvih srednjovjekovnih hrvatskih kneževina i kraljevstava do modernog, suverenog i demokratskog društva. Danas, kao članica Europske unije i NATO saveza, Hrvatska je primjer uspješne tranzicije i integracije u europske i svjetske strukture.

Ovaj dan je prilika da se prisjetimo vrijednosti koje nas povezuju: ljubavi prema domovini, poštovanja prema različitostima i zajedničkog rada na izgradnji bolje budućnosti za sve građane. Neka nam ovaj blagdan bude podsjetnik na važnost jedinstva, solidarnosti i zajedništva u svim izazovima s kojima se suočavamo.

Želimo vam da proslavite ovaj dan u miru, sretno i ponosno, okruženi obitelji, prijateljima i dragim osobama. Neka hrvatska zastava vijori kao simbol naše slobode, hrabrosti i nade u bolje sutra.

Request for Raising the Flag of the Republic of Croatia

Dear Mayor Sim,

On behalf of the Canadian-Croatian Congress, I am writing to kindly request that the City of Vancouver fly the official Flag of the Republic of Croatia in recognition of Croatia’s Independence Day, celebrated on May 30th. We respectfully ask that the flag be raised for one week, from Friday, May 26th, 2024, to Saturday, June 3rd, 2024.

The Croatian community in Vancouver takes great pride in its heritage and contributions to the cultural diversity of our city. Raising the Croatian flag during this period would be a meaningful gesture of recognition and solidarity with the Croatian-Canadian community as we celebrate this important national day.

Canada Day

Ivan,

Today, my family and I are celebrating Canada Day.

The Canada that I know is a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming country.

It’s important that we celebrate our country’s accomplishments, as we also reflect on historical injustices.

When some municipalities across the country reject this legacy by cancelling their Canada Day celebrations, I disagree.

Canada Day is a time to acknowledge all the sacrifices that have made Canada what it is today.

It is this ongoing effort to make a better nation that makes Canada the best nation. We can be proud that so many fleeing persecution or discrimination choose Canada as their home. We remain a beacon of hope and opportunity.

We celebrate Canada Day because there is no other place we would rather be.

I encourage you to watch my video on the importance of celebrating Canada Day, and I hope you have a fun, safe holiday with your family.

Hrvatska zastava na gradsoj vjećnici u Vancouveru

Hrvatska zastava koja se vijorila na gradskoj vijećnici u Vancouveru 30. svibnja 1990. godine bila je simboličan čin povodom Dana hrvatske državnosti. Ta je godina bila posebno značajna za Hrvatsku jer je označavala početak demokratskih promjena i jačanje težnji za neovisnost, nakon prvih višestranačkih izbora u Hrvatskoj.

Donacija zastave od strane Hrvatskog Kanadskog Kongresa gradu Vancouveru predstavlja važan trenutak u povijesti hrvatske dijaspore u Kanadi. Hrvatski Kanadski Kongres, kao organizacija koja okuplja Hrvate u Kanadi, ima dugogodišnju ulogu u promicanju hrvatske kulture, jezika i interesa hrvatske zajednice u Kanadi. Ovim činom, zajednica je istaknula svoju povezanost s domovinom i podržala težnje Hrvatske za slobodom i neovisnošću.

Vijorenje hrvatske zastave u Vancouveru na Dan državnosti 1990. godine bilo je i simbol prijateljstva između Hrvatske i Kanade, kao i priznanje doprinosa hrvatske dijaspore u razvoju kanadskog društva. Danas se takvi događaji pamte kao važni koraci u očuvanju nacionalnog identiteta Hrvata u inozemstvu i kao dokaz snažne povezanosti dijaspore s domovinom.
