Statehood Day in Croatia

The Dubrovnik Times

Croatia today, the 25th of June, celebrates Statehood Day. On this day 21 years ago the Croatian government passed a constitutional decision on the sovereignty and independence of Croatia. On the 25th of June 1991 a process of independence from the other Yugoslav states began, this decision was taken on the basis of the will of the Croatia citizens, expressed in a referendum on the 19th of May 1991.

Through the international community a declaration was established in which a three month delayed deadline was given to the implementation of the decision from the 25th of June 1991. Therefore on the 8th of October 1991, after the deadline expired, the Republic of Croatia broke legal ties with the other states in the former Yugoslavia and became an autonomous and independent country. That day, the 8th of October, is celebrated in Croatia as Independence Day.
